Referendum Notice- Changes to LSU’s Current Council Term of Office Extension

NOTICE OF REFERENDUM

ON CHANGES TO LSU’s Current Council Term of Office Extension

VOTING: November 25th 10:00 am- November 27th 5:00 pm

LOCATION: Voting will be done online. A link will be sent out via an email by Langara College.

Preamble: 

Whereas:  The members of the Council of the Langara Students’ Union Association (the “LSU”) are elected annually in the Fall Semester of each year as required by the Bylaws of the LSU (the “Bylaws”).

And Whereas:  The LSU has a membership of more than 11,000 students and is required to follow all guidelines regulated by local public health authorities to limit the spread of COVID-19 since March 18^th, 2020.

And Whereas:  The Government of Canada has provided guidance that all post-secondary institutions provide a majority of instruction online for the health and safety of the campus community and, as such the majority of students at Langara College are attending classes online in the Fall 2020 semester.

And Whereas:  Article 9.9 of the Bylaws restricts the voting for the Election of the Council to take place in-person. However, due to COVID-19 and certain administrative limitations, the LSU is unable to hold such Election of the Council as required pursuant to the Bylaws.

And Whereas:  To continue the business and services of the LSU, combined with protecting the health and safety of the campus community, the LSU would like to extend the term of office for all current members of the Council of the LSU who meet the eligibility criteria set out in the Bylaws, including in Article 6.5.1.

And Whereas: The LSU proposes to amend the Bylaws to permit the extension of the term of office for all current Members of the Council of the LSU who meet the eligibility criteria as set forth in the Bylaws.

And Whereas:  The members of the LSU may resolve by Special Resolution to amend the Bylaws and the Bylaws provide that a Special Resolution shall be passed by Referendum if approved by at least three-quarters of the votes cast.
