The Langara Students’ Union is here to advocate for students not only in their academic pursuits but also on social issues going on around the world. The student board not only works to raise awareness on political, environmental, and social issues by advocating for students’ rights but also addressing concerns that effect students’ college life and endeavors.
The student council board serves to represent and work in the interests of the student body at Langara College. Whether it be lobbying various levels of government, and organizing on-campus events, workshops, rallies, and speakers representing all students of different races, ages, ethnic backgrounds, and gender identity.

Tires needing some air? Bike chain looking like it needs some grease? Looking to tighten something on your bike?
The LSU is an environment-friendly organization and believes in ethical and green options on campus. Biking to work (or school in our case), is a prime example of our dedication towards our values. Therefore, we have our very own bike shop for students to use free of cost to encourage biking to school. Students can drop by our bike shop to do work on their bicycles.
Located on the Lower Lounge by the Lollipop Moment Café, this little repair shop is easily accessible. The bike shop has an assortment of tools geared in helping students with minor to mid-sized repair jobs on their bikes. The shop carries not only supply tools, but also tire pumps and a mount to stand your bike while doing work. We also sell parts such as a variety of valve tubes and bike cables. Ball bearings, glue, patches, and lubricants are in the shop to use free of charge.
There are bike racks placed around the campus with a notable amount of them being on the ‘A’ Building facing the north side. Wanting to check out the bike shop?

The LSU donates over $40,000 annually to the Community Cupboard initiatives started by Langara College to support students who are financially struggling to feed themselves. In today’s, rapidly changing world, education serves as a focus in the lives of students who are looking to build their future by laying the foundation of a solid educational background. Often, students are compelled to take on the financial burden of their education and schooling while being forced to neglect other basic areas of their needs, such as food.
The Community Cupboard project provides students with meal assistance, and this integral donation supports this cause to not just help provide food on the table of those students who are in dire need, but also offer some relief in their financial condition. In the awake of the Covid-19 global pandemic situation, the LSU has further injected additional funds to help out vulnerable students in this time of need.
We provide other general services to our members. These services can easily be obtained by simply visiting our building or coming to our reception desk.
The LSU building has 5 bulletin boards where you can post items of interest to our student members. Postings should be no larger than 8.5” X 11” in size and must be approved & date stamped at the Reception desk in on the top level of the Students’ Union Building.
English Tutors wanting to advertise must be registered with the College English Department to ensure compliance with college policies regarding plagiarism. Any postings deemed racist, sexist, or homophobic will be removed from all bulletin boards on campus.
There is a free hot water dispenser located in the Lower Lounge in the corridor to the right of the lower lounge entrance to the Union Café.
Your vehicle’s battery died? Come by the LSU Reception to borrow a set of jumper cables. Please present a valid photo ID. Now all you need do is find a friend with a vehicle to assist you.
We have microwaves in the LSU building in the lower lounge for students to use. Please be mindful when using them and cover the food with paper towels to avoid splatter. A sink is situated in the same area to wash any dishes and utensils.
With two floors of seating, our student lounge is an open spacious area with comfortable seating and games tables. So if you’re looking to get some homework done, do a group project, or looking to just relax, then come on by!
Langara College offers secure Wi-Fi connections throughout the campus. All students are assigned a default password to access their account, which can be changed after.
The LSU building is also part of this network. Students use their Langara federated password. We also have a secure LSU Wi-Fi connection. Please visit the front reception desk to obtain the password.
The LSU Health & Dental Plan is extended health and dental coverage, designed specifically for students to cover expenses not covered by basic provincial healthcare plans. The Plan was proposed in a student referendum in April 2005 and received overwhelming support- over 88% of students voted in favor!
Since then, our plan has provided post-secondary students at Langara with the much-needed health & dental coverage with our membership growing steadily and taking part in this affordable coverage. Pacific Blue Cross is the insurance provider company for our extended health care coverage.
All students who are members of the LSU are automatically covered by the LSU Health & Dental Plan, including international students, part-time students, sponsored students, and students starting their study year in either September or January.
The Health & Dental Plan now includes Empower Me, a mental health add-on that is a confidential 24/7 counseling helpline. It can be easily accessed and is multilingual, inclusive of gender and faith with qualified counselors to offer support around areas of pressure & stress, addictions, nutrition, relationships & family, emotional, financial, and emotional issues. Members can access the helpline toll-free by calling 1-844-741-6389.
Established through a referendum in 2022, LSU provides its members with access to Legal Services. Through a partner law firm, most full-time and part-time students registered for the Fall or Spring Semester who are LSU members have access to a legal consultation service to consult a duly certified lawyer regarding any legal question. Students can also seek legal representation within their province of study when their case qualifies for further counsel.
The legal consultation service provides quick access to legal counseling on any area of law, including immigration law. It offers these features:• Legal opinions • Legal research• Advice on legal documents and contracts • Interpretation of applicable laws for each case• Development of a strategy• Sharing general information of a legal nature • Follow-ups by the partner law firm• Personalized and individualized case management
If a student’s case qualifies, legal representation will be provided on the housing, employment, and academic disputes. A lawyer will take charge of proceedings related to these 3 areas of law.

The policy year runs from September 1st to August 31st of each year. New students attending in the January spring semester will now be automatically enrolled in the health and dental plan whether they are full-time or part-time.
If you are covered by another extended health and/or dental plan (i.e. parent or spouse’s employee plan, not BC MSP), you can combine both plans to maximize your overall coverage and reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs. Alternatively, if you’re covered by another private health and/or dental plan, you can opt-out of the LSU Health Plan or the LSU Dental Plan, or both during the change-of-coverage period and receive a refund for the Plan.
Students are automatically re-enrolled each year unless the student has chosen to opt-out permanently. All opt-outs must be completed within the Change-of-Coverage Period (see below). You will be asked to provide proof of equivalent coverage – a copy of a certificate or letter from the plan sponsor (e.g. employer). Your proof of coverage can be submitted electronically or mailed before the deadline. You can opt-out online at www.studentcare.ca
The Change-of-Coverage Period is the given period at the beginning of the semester when you can either opt-out or enroll your spouse and/or dependents in the LSU Health & Dental Plan. All enrollments and opt-outs must be completed within the first three weeks of the Fall semester. The fall 2023 coverage period is Sept 1-22, 2023, and the Spring 2024 coverage period is Jan 2-23, 2024. New students attending in the January spring semester will now be automatically enrolled in the health and dental plan whether they are full-time or part-time.
Claims processing is delayed during the first two months of the Fall semester as StudentCare waits for complete enrollment lists after opt-outs and enrollments have been processed. During this time, you can mail your claims, but they will not be processed until the Blackout Period ends. Students may also hold their claims until the end of the Blackout Period as practitioners and pharmacists can’t accept Pay Direct or assignment of benefits during this time.

Langara Students’ Union now offers in-house immigration services to International Students (those who do not hold Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency in Canada) at Langara. Our Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) will be providing immigration services related to study permits, post-graduate work permits, restorations, extensions, & PR (family class, provincial nominee, Canadian experience class, federal skilled worker, federal trade worker & labour market impact assessments). Students can now get advice on their immigration matters and learn about the different pathways available to obtain permanent residency in Canada.
Applications will be taken on a first come first served basis. Please allow up to 3 business days to follow up regarding your case. Consultant will get in touch with members via email. Members are recommended to bring photocopies of all case-supporting documents. Appointments are taken in 30 min duration slots to a maximum of 3 appointments per case.

Look no further! We provide tax filing services for just $25. Please drop by our front reception, make an appointment, and get your taxes done. The deadline to submit your tax returns for 2022 is on or before April 30, 2023. All proceeds go directly into a bursary fund providing students with financial assistance.

Please be aware that you will need to provide the most up-to-date contact & mailing address information to Revenue Canada to receive a refund. Please notify Revenue Canada directly if your address changes after you have filed your taxes.
Appointments are limited and are made on a first-come first served basis.
Whether you have a load of heavy books or your backup is always weighing you down, we got a great option to securely store your belongings on campus. Lockers are located in the basement of the “A” Building. We have two sizes to choose from. The lock is provided. Locker availability is based on a first-come-first-served basis.
Small Locker: $25.00 ($9.00 deposit is given back at the end of the semester).
Large Locker: $35.00 ($9.00 deposit is given back at the end of the semester).
All Locker renters must remove their personal items before the last day of final exams. The LSU will not accept responsibility for property left in the lockers after the deadline. Lock deposits are refunded if the lock is returned to the LSU office on/before the deadline.
Langara Students’ Union (LSU) has contributed over $100,000 this year towards financial awards for LSU members and that amount grows every year! Listed here are the bursaries, awards and scholarships you should know about. All of our bursaries, scholarships and awards are available to international and domestic students that meet the award criteria. LSU’s bursaries, awards and scholarships are administered through the Langara College Financial Aid Office, so you must apply there. Awards are non-repayable financial awards given to domestic or international students based on a combination of financial need and exemplary service. Unlike a bursary where financial need is the main requirement, awards require that the applicant demonstrate “merit,” in other words, service to others through volunteering or playing a leadership role in the college community or among their peers. Applications are necessary for awards. Remember to pay close attention to the posted deadlines. Applications may be obtained at the Langara College Financial Aid Department.
6 Awards of $1,000
The Award is to be made to Langara College students who meet the following criteria:
(a) the recipients will be enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program
(b) the student with the highest academic achievement from each of the following terms, will receive an award.
-Terms 4, 5, and 6
(c) the recipient will submit a one-page application describing how they demonstrate leadership within their cohort.
2 awards of $500
This award is offered to any student taking part in a Langara-sanctioned study abroad offering, including field schools, exchange programs and international practicum. To be eligible applicants must demonstrate financial need and volunteer or non-paid service of some sort.

The Award is to be made to Langara College student/s who meet the following criteria:
(a) the recipient will be enrolled in the Registered Massage Therapy program
(b) the recipient will have achieved academic excellence.
(c) Maximum one award per annum

The Award is to be made to Langara College student/s who meet the following criteria:
(a) the recipient will be enrolled in the Supply Chain and Logistics Post-Degree Diploma program
(b) the recipient will have achieved academic excellence.
(c) Maximum one award per annum
3 Awards of $500
Awarded every Spring, this award is available to Langara College domestic or international students who are also members of LSU and enrolled in a Langara University-Transfer Program. To be eligible students must be currently registered in a minimum of 9 credits and who were registered in a minimum 9 credits in one of the past two terms. Students must demonstrate outstanding student leadership or service through volunteerism with the LSU or with Langara College.
12 Awards of $500
The Volunteer Leadership Award is available to domestic or international students who are also members of LSU. To be eligible students must demonstrate outstanding student leadership or service through volunteerism with the LSU or with Langara College.
Bursaries are non-repayable financial assistance given to students based on their financial need and satisfactory academic standing. Applications are strictly confidential and handled through the Financial Aid Office. Unlike other bursaries, international students are also eligible for LSU bursaries and all applicants must be current LSU members who are enrolled in a minimum of two courses for which LSU fees are assessed and collected (i.e., academic program courses or the RMT program). While only individuals in exceptional financial need will be considered for funding, do apply if you are strapped for cash in paying for your courses.
Amount Varies Depending Upon Demand and Need: $10,000 given to numerous students annually
This is funding for students with disabilities for costly medication, treatments, psycho-educational assessment, or contribution to other costs. Students must provide evidence of need for these expenditures. Preference is given to students who are registered in at least two courses. Students must be registered with and receiving services through the Langara College Office of Disability Services. This bursary maybe awarded in any semester.
Amount Varies Depending Upon Demand: Approximately 10 Awards with a Maximum Value of $500 each
Offered in the Spring and Fall semesters, this bursary is for students in financial need. Preference is given to those students with a commitment to community service, as demonstrated by letters from community organizations where the applicant volunteered.
2 Bursaries of $800
This is funding for students with disabilities for costly medication, treatments, psycho-educational assessment, or contribution to other costs. Students must provide evidence of need for these expenditures. Preference is given to students who are registered in at least two courses. Students must be registered with and receiving services through the Langara College Office of Disability Services. This bursary maybe awarded in any semester.
Amount Varies Depending Upon Demand and Need: Approximately 10 bursaries of approximately $400 each
Awarded in the Spring, Summer, or Fall Semesters to students with demonstrated financial need.
3 Awards of $1,000
To honour Genevier Sullivan, a Langara College student and champion for Indigenous and Post Care education, and student mental health, the Langara Students’ Union has created this bursary in her memory.
The Award is to be made to Langara College students who meet the following criteria:
(a) the recipients will demonstrate financial need
(b) the recipient will identify as Indigenous, Post Care, or be enrolled as a student with a disability.
$25,000 annually
To be disbursed in amounts at the discretion of the College’s Financial Aid department as outlined. Recipient’s will be enrolled as an international student; the recipient \will demonstrate an emergency financial need.
The Award is to be made to Langara College student/s who meet the following criteria:
(a) the recipient/s will be enrolled as an international student;
(b) the recipient/s will demonstrate an emergency financial need
(c) Maximum award is $1000 per annum.
3 Bursaries of $350
Awarded to women with demonstrated financial need who experience obstacles to their educational goals. A female student must provide evidence of the obstacles that they are in the process of overcoming or have overcome in pursuit of their educational goals. Must be enrolled in a minimum of two courses for which LSU fees are assessed and collected.
Scholarships are financial awards given to students with excellent or top Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA). There are two types of LSU scholarships that differ according to the criteria for award. Departmental scholarships are given to the student with the top CGPA and the nomination comes from the department or faculty so no application is required by the student. LSU general scholarships require a minimum CGPA of 3.0, require application by the student, and also have a “merit” component such as volunteerism or student leadership. General Scholarship recipients are chosen by a selection committee.
The LSU donates money to Langara College who then allots them to the different scholarship categories to which it will contribute towards and award to the deserving candidates. Are you having difficulty in dealing with an instructor or any instructional staff member? Feeling like you are not being treated with fairness in the classroom? Are your work efforts constantly being overlooked?
Sometimes students find themselves stuck in unforeseeable or unpredictable situations and seek help outside. For these instances, an ombudsperson can be of help in seeing light. We have an onsite ombudsperson who works to serve in your best interests in helping you navigate through problems. We offer assistance in a safe, confidential environment. Get informed of your rights as a student and the grievance procedure of the college.
Some of the problems and issues we can assist with and may not be limited to include; academic misconduct, concerns regarding instructors, credential issues, and grade appeals. As each individual case varies, different approaches and methods may be undertaken. Students are strongly advised to talk to their instructors and/or department heads prior to filling in the application to see the ombudsperson. Our ombuds coordinators are not lawyers and do not provide legal advice and only assist students with their appeals.
Cases are taken from 9:00 am- 4:30 pm during regular business days. Students are recommended to bring and present any supporting case-related documentation. Please allow 1-4 business days for follow-up.

The Langara Students’ Union advocates bringing affordable public transportation to its members. The U-Pass is one of the core services provided by the LSU. Members who have paid their fees in full gain accessibility to 3-zone ridership on the Sky Trains, Bus, and Sea Bus per semester. They are given a Compass Card that is to be updated online every month once students have signed in and registered their card. The cost of a regular adult fare outside of the u-pass system through fare zones ranges from $91 to $170 per month. The U-Pass BC Program is the best alternative for students and all Students’ Association across Metro Vancouver are working together to ensure students pay a reasonable fare while traveling on the transit system.
