The LSU donates over $40,000 annually to the Community Cupboard initiatives started by Langara College to support students who are financially struggling to feed themselves. In today’s, rapidly changing world, education serves as a focus in the lives of students who are looking to build their future by laying the foundation of a solid educational background. Often, students are compelled to take on the financial burden of their education and schooling while being forced to neglect other basic areas of their needs, such as food.

Food insecurity has severe consequences for one’s health. Post-secondary students are especially at risk, with over 50% of students at Canadian post-secondary institutions experiencing moderate to severe levels of food insecurity.

The Community Cupboard was an onsite food security program that Langara College offered to students experiencing financial hardship. In June 2023, the program began to transition away from dry goods and that Fall started offering emergency grocery gift cards to students in need. Access to these grocery cards is through Financial Aid and Langara Global.

Grocery gift cards are most useful for students in need since they allow students to access food that accommodates dietary restrictions, is culturally preferred, and produces less waste (previously, the Community Cupboard offered a preset bag of dry goods monthly).

This new program is meant to be an emergency assistance and is one way we help our students to succeed at Langara College.
